PJ’s Brewing Growth in Texas, Florida and More
By: PJ's CoffeeWith coffee as the second most consumed beverage in the world and the source of 75% of America’s caffeine intake, we take our craftsmanship seriously at PJ’s Coffee. For us, coffee has a soul and gives us the inspiration to get through busy days and long nights. It is the second largest traded commodity in the world and a $100 billion industry that’s continuously growing, and PJ’s is proud to be part of it.
Market Growth and Development
From our humble beginnings as a coffeehouse in New Orleans in 1978, PJ’s now has over 170 operating locations, with more than 120 currently in development. In 2023, we have already opened 13 locations and anticipate 20 more in new and existing markets by the end of the year.
Most of our recent growth stems from our neighboring state, Texas, and our shared love for hospitality only strengthens us. The Lone Star State is home to the second-highest number of PJ’s locations after Louisiana, with that growth beginning in mid-2018 with two traditional locations in the Houston market — Cypress and Pearland. Currently, we have 21 locations up and running across Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and others, with plans to open more. With over 80 licenses committed to Texas, many of which are part of multi-unit development agreements, we anticipate 8-10 additional openings between now and the end of the year.
Florida is expected to be PJ’s next largest state for future growth, with over 30 licenses awarded in the following markets: Orlando, Tampa, Pensacola, Panama City, West Palm Beach, Destin, Jacksonville, Naples and Largo.
PJ’s has 170 operating locations, with 111 of them being traditional. The top 25% of our franchised units with a drive-thru averaged $1,034,105 in net sales* in 2022, while PJ’s experienced a 14.3% same-store sales increase systemwide compared to the previous year.
Of all the traditional locations, 43% are women-owned franchises, while individuals from various racial and ethnic backgrounds own 26%. PJ’s has awarded over 60 licenses in the past year and a half, and 62% were granted to diverse franchise owners — many in various development stages as we seek to expand throughout the United States and international markets.
PJ’s Difference in the Coffee Industry
Ultimately, we are driven by a passion for local roasting, single-origin coffees, hospitality, experience and our New Orleans roots. Although proud to use the top 1% of Arabica beans for our fresh gourmet roasts, PJ’s main distinction among coffee franchises invokes a distinctly New Orleans feeling of strolling the Mississippi River and sounds of light jazz echoing somewhere beyond Bourbon Street — beignets. The hot and pillowy fried French pastry dusted with powdery confectioners’ sugar has been a significant factor in generating sales at all locations that serve them, and its popularity shows no signs of decreasing anytime soon.
And, of course, our heart and soul lie within the community. While we strive to deliver the same quality New Orleans-inspired environment to all locations, PJ’s also leads the industry in sourcing methods by supporting sustainability from farm to cup. Coffee farms are the economic livelihood of over 25 million people in the world — and our farming partnerships from Honduras to Nicaragua to Brazil and beyond support farming families by enhancing their community infrastructure, cultivating strong educational programs and providing everyday essentials for an improved quality of life.
